The Role Fashion Plays When It Comes To Confidence

I think it’s completely obvious that I genuinely love fashion. I even have a tattoo of a hanger with the word “fashion” intertwined in it. I’ve always loved fashion, and now it’s pretty cool I get to live out my dream in the industry.

I get that a lot of people don’t love the fashion industry. There are plenty of things I don’t like either. But when someone blatantly tries to put the industry down or act as if it’s not important, I always think of one thing: The scene in The Devil Wears Prada where Miranda Priestly goes OFF about “this stuff”. Seriously it’s one of the most iconic monologues of all time, in my opinion. The fashion industry is a huge part of everyone’s life, whether they like it or not. No, they don’t have to live and breathe fashion like many of us do, but they should without a doubt respect it.

Not only does the fashion industry account for a ton of the economic growth in the world, but it also is extremely personal too. I like to think about it this way: No matter what you do, your every day life involves clothes. Right? Every single day you have a choice to make as soon as you wake up: You have to pick out what to wear. Fashion plays a part in everyone’s lives.

As a fashion blogger and someone who works in the fashion industry, I typically gravitate towards things that I’ve recently purchased OR things I KNOW look good. For others, they might have a go-to “uniform” that they wear (this is what I’ve been wearing lately) because they don’t want to put in the time or effort. But still, clothing is a part of people’s lives. Clothing, in fact, does affect your mind and how you think…and how you feel.

Break out those power pieces

I think it’s safe to say that clothing certainly helps give you confidence. Let’s say you have an interview coming up for a job. You’re not going to look in your closet and pull out a pair of sweatpants, leggings, or booty shorts. (At least I’d hope not.) You’re going to take a look in your closet and pick out those “power pieces”. Things that you feel comfortable in, yet give you the boost of confidence you need. The same can be said for a big meeting. If I know I have a meeting with upper management, I’m not going to wear jeans that day. For me, power pieces include a black blazer and a great pair of shoes (right now they’re my red loafers and these classic pumps).

When I wear these pieces, I automatically feel more confident and accomplish anything.

Dress for the day (or night) ahead

Your closet contains all of the things you need for heightened performance, a way for you to figure out how to be the best version of yourself that day. You could be the most confident person in the world, but if you aren’t feeling your look, nothing is going to get accomplished. Dressing with confidence is more than putting on the trendiest pieces in your closet, it’s about feeling good in what you’re wearing. The way you dress can have a gigantic effect on your attitude towards the day.

Let’s say you wake up on the wrong side of the bed (we’ve all had those days). Yes, you know those days when you just want to stay in your pajamas all day long. But we’re adults, and this is life, and we gotta get up and go to work every day. Try reaching for one of your power pieces. It can’t hurt to at least dress for the part when you’re not feeling it that day. And who knows, a good outfit can possibly just change your entire day.

Or let’s say you’re doing a girls’ night out. Again, you’re probably not going to wear sweatpants. You’re going to want to look your best for when you’re hittin’ the town with your girls. You’re going to reach for a fun top and chic pants or a sexy dress. Right? You’re not going to want to go out with your beautiful girls and look like a frump. That just brings the whole group down;)

It’s a domino effect

You will be definitely surprised to know that something as simple as how you dress usually goes on to affect your self-confidence and attitude. Changing the way you dress will change the way you feel. When you are well dressed and look good you will automatically feel better. When you feel good about yourself, you are more likely to feel good inside, treat others better, and have more energy. Sounds simple, right? If everyone thought this way when they woke up, the world would be a much better place. Don’t you agree?;)
