The Destroyed Denim Jacket

Over the years, I feel like my style has dramatically changed. So when I think of how to style a denim jacket that’s a bit more unconventional…it’s going to be on the edgier side.

If you knew or followed me in college, then you would very clearly remember my preppy J.Crew and Kate Spade days. And while yes, it was fun dressing up in the cutest outfits or like I stepped out of a J.Crew magazine, it’s just not me anymore.

Ever since I began working in the fashion industry, I realized that it’s OK to dress differently. I wake up every morning and dress how I feel. I look to other bloggers, my coworkers, random people on the streets of NYC, and e-commerce sites to gain inspiration. And right now, I’m not sure how the heck I would describe my personal style.

But what I do know is that I’m obsessed with this destroyed denim jacket. I normally know how to style a denim jacket (last seen in this post here), but I was stumped with this one. It gives off a way edgier vibe than all of the ones I own.

So, let’s talk about how to style a denim jacket…

I kept the rest of this look fairly simple – took my go-to black jeans (also seen in yesterday’s post) to keep up with that edgy vibe and paired it with one of my new cashmere sweaters (it’s actually a cold shoulder sweater, and it’s amazing….and on sale!). Oh, and I also wanted to show you my new suede booties! I was in desperate need of a second pair of black booties. I wore my Alexander Wang booties TO DEATH. Literally, they were starting to get holes in the bottom. These are very similar, except in suede, and are so comfortable! I’m happy I got them!

Since this particular denim jacket style is a bit oversized, I wanted to push the sleeves up to help it look less baggy and a little cooler.

Did it work?;)

Oh, I totally need a denim jacket in my life! (And you style yours SO well.) I can totally relate to what you had to say about your style evolving over the years. While I still enjoy a good preppy #OOTD, I realize that there’s nothing wrong with changing it up and experimenting a bit — whether it be adopting a more downtown aesthetic or test-driving a more boho look. At the end of the day, my approach to getting dressed is to just have FUN, ‘cuz that’s what it’s all about, amirite?!
