Reviewing the books I’ve read since June!
The Perfect Liar
Susannah, a young widow and single mother, has remarried well: to Max, a charismatic artist and popular speaker whose career took her and her fifteen-year-old son out of New York City and to a quiet Vermont university town. Strong-willed and attractive, Susannah expects that her life is perfectly in place again. Then one quiet morning she finds a note on her door: I KNOW WHO YOU ARE.
Max dismisses the note as a prank. But days after a neighborhood couple comes to dinner, the husband mysteriously dies in a tragic accident while on a run with Max. Soon thereafter, a second note appears on their door: DID YOU GET AWAY WITH IT?
Both Susannah and Max are keeping secrets from the world and from each other —secrets that could destroy their family and everything they have built.
This book was a quick read, and I’m sure most people can guess the twist in the book. But, still recommend!
Leave No Trace
I randomly saw this in Barnes and Noble and picked it up at the library a few days later. The story is about a man and his son who trekked into the wilderness and didn’t return. Until the son appeared. He was violent and uncommunicative, so he was sent to a psychiatric facility. Maya Stark is a language therapist, and is charged with making a connection with this boy. He refuses to answer anything about his father or the last ten years. Maya, who has her own secrets, is drawn closer to him, and realizes she will risk everything to reunite him with his father.
I Invited Her In
When Mel hears from a long-lost friend in need of help, she doesn’t hesitate to invite her to stay. Mel and Abi were best friends back in the day, sharing the highs and lows of student life, until Mel’s unplanned pregnancy made her drop out of her studies. Seventeen years later, Mel and Abi’s lives couldn’t be more different. This dark, unsettling tale of the reunion of long-lost friends is thoroughly gripping exploration of wanting what you can’t have, jealousy and revenge.
This book had A LOT of random turns, and I was definitely HERE. FOR. IT.
Genuine Fraud
I received this book in the mail (thanks to Get Underlined!), and I immediately wanted to read it. For some reason, the cover just jumped out at me. (I guess you can say I really do judge a book by its cover.) The book has a bunch of twists mainly involving two best friends – one an orphan, one an heiress. There’s murders, there’s romances, and disguises. Pick up this book and you’ll see what I’m talking about.
What She Knew
I really loved this one! This one is about a mom who went for a walk in the woods with her son…and then he disappears. The story is told from the mother’s perspective as well as the detective on the case. My favorite part of this book was how much research the author put into this book. It truly felt like it was exactly what would happen during a police investigation. Nothing felt super unrealistic. It was definitely a page turner to see what happened to the little boy in the end.
Currently Reading: The Cheerleaders
I’m about halfway through this book and I’m LOVING it. Here’s the synopsis:
There are no more cheerleaders in the town of Sunnybrook.
First there was the car accident—two girls gone after hitting a tree on a rainy night. Not long after, the murders happened. Those two girls were killed by the man next door. The police shot him, so no one will ever know why he did it. Monica’s sister was the last cheerleader to die. After her suicide, Sunnybrook High disbanded the cheer squad. No one wanted to be reminded of the girls they lost.
That was five years ago. Now the faculty and students at Sunnybrook High want to remember the lost cheerleaders. But for Monica, it’s not that easy. She just wants to forget. Only, Monica’s world is starting to unravel. There are the letters in her stepdad’s desk, an unearthed, years-old cell phone, a strange new friend at school. . . . Whatever happened five years ago isn’t over. Some people in town know more than they’re saying. And somehow Monica is at the center of it all.
There are no more cheerleaders in Sunnybrook, but that doesn’t mean anyone else is safe.
