How to Take Care of Your Cashmere Sweaters

One of my favorite things in this world is a cashmere sweater.  I will never forget my first cashmere sweater. I’m pretty sure I actually “borrowed” it from my college best friend…and then she let me keep it (aka she realized I wasn’t giving it back). Since then, I’ve always had such a love for cashmere. To me, it’s the epitome of luxury. I firmly believe it’s a year-round staple too (no I’m serious, even in summer!!!). I know  I talk about cashmere A LOT, so I wanted to take the time to also talk about how you should take care of your cashmere sweaters!

Shaving Them Regularly

This is probably the most important step! I believe in fixing a problem before it becomes a problem, ya know? As you wear your cashmere sweaters, you’ll notice some pilling. And if you wear them an abnormal amount of time When it comes to how to take care of your cashmere sweaters, shaving your sweaters is the easiest way! There are cashmere sweater combs out there, but I haven’t used them to be honest. I usually take my de-piller after every couple of wears, lay my sweater flat, and gently pill in 1 direction.

AND VOILA! If you get ahead of the crazy pilling, your cashmere sweater should continue to look brand new!

Wash in Cold Water with a Mild Detergent

Cashmere, itself, isn’t THAT delicate of a fabric. BUT that doesn’t mean you should be flippant when it comes to laundering. Cashmere doesn’t need to be laundered frequently, but it SHOULD be carefully hand-washed. This may seem super annoying, but it’s not that terrible when you think about the fact you don’t need to wash them that often.

Steps on how to take care of your cashmere sweaters:

  • Fill sink/tub with lukewarm water
  • Add cashmere detergent (or baby shampoo!!!)
  • Move sweater around in the shampoo
  • Drain sink
  • Repeat with no detergent

Once you’re finished washing, lay flat on a towel, and press gently the remove the excess water from your sweater (avoid wringing it!!!). My biggest tip is to avoid picking up the sweater while it’s soaking wet to avoid any growth or misshaping.

IF (emphasis on the if) you’re in a pinch, you could machine wash it. First, you’ll need to put in a mesh bag to protect the sweater from getting agitated in the washer. MAKE SURE you’ve selected the delicate cycle (some machines have a wool selection too). The temperature must be on cold and the spin should be on low. Once the cycle is complete, IMMEDIATELY remove the sweater to reduce creasing, and then follow the above lay flat steps! Whatever you do, NEVER put cashmere in the dryer.

When To Dry-Clean

I know, I know. The thought of dry cleaning is DAUNTING. But I would highly recommend sending your cashmere sweaters to the dry cleaners every so often…especially if you have a stain. I haven’t mastered anything to get stains without ruining the sweater, so taking to a dry cleaner is definitely your best bet.

Storing Your Cashmere

This may not be a necessity, but whenever I wear a cashmere sweater and I’m changing out of my day clothes I ALWAYS leave my cashmere sweater laying out. I like to let it air out overnight, and then I fold it back up and put onto my shelf. Next, I think it’s important to make sure you’re storing your cashmere correctly. A little tip I learned is to fold them inside out. I have no rhyme or reason for this, but it seems to have worked all of these years for me. ALWAYS fold your cashmere sweaters, as hanging them will most likely cause them to grow and get wonky. I could definitely get better at this but you REALLY should store your cashmere in a canvas storage bag/bin to keep dust out. Also adding some lavender can help as it’s a natural moth repellent.
