Sometimes you need to step out of your comfort zone and try new things: Like this black midi dress.
THE LOOK | black midi dress, suede jacket, bow mules (similar here), ray-ban aviators (under $12 here), bow clutch (sold out, similar here)
I was shopping around H&M one day after work, and found this black midi dress (also comes in a cute crop top pattern). I absolutely didn’t need it, but I wanted to try it anyway. So it came home with me. When I tried it on, I wasn’t 100% sure of it. Is this really my style? Are my hips too big for this? Am I too short? Yep, all of these thoughts ran through my head within the five minutes of me having it on.
In the end, I decided it was different. And different is good. Especially when it comes to personal style.
Naturally, I would pair this with heels or an open toe sandal. But, again, since we’re being different here, I decided to wear my black bow mules (also obsessed with these). I think this look gives off a cool vibe as opposed to a dressed up one. I, of course, had to wear my suede jacket for two reasons: 1. It was pretty cold this day, and 2. See below;)
If you’re currently in a style rut of some sort, I have some advice for you.
Don’t be afraid to step out of your comfort zone. Seriously. It will help. By stepping out of my own comfort zone with this particular look, I was able to create something different. And I actually really loved the outcome! This black midi dress is a keeper – I’m so glad I kept it!
Use your security blanket pieces. Did you have a security blanket growing up? Or an item that you just didn’t want to go anywhere without? (Mine was a pacifier, by the way. I’m sure my parents loved that because I talked A LOT when I was a baby.) When you’re in a style rut, pull pieces that you’re 100% comfortable wearing. For me, I know this suede jacket will always come in handy when I’m not totally on board with a different piece.
Stop overthinking and just wear it. This is probably the biggest reason why I don’t wear certain pieces or trends. I usually overthink what I’m wearing. I’m definitely guilty of worrying about what others may think of me, and I need to overcome that. WHO CARES WHAT OTHER PEOPLE THINK?! If I want to try out a certain trend or piece, I’m going to do it. And you should too.
So tell me, how do YOU plan on getting out of a style rut?

H& M is so good for this because the price point allows you to try some different things you might not otherwise invest in. Looks great! I love the shades, I really need a new pair!
Agreed! I’ve been LOVING them lately. And I’ve had these aviators since I was a freshman in college! I love them!
You look great in this dress! I agree that styling those pieces that are out of our comfort zones gets a little easier when we pair them with old favorites. Thanks for the reminder to take a chance!
