Everyday Tote Bags: 5 Styles for Work and Weekends

A requested round-up of everyday tote bags that are versatile and timeless. If you’ve been feeling torn on whether to invest in a designer bag or something more price-pointed, start with what you actually carry. A zip-top laptop tote solves a different problem from a smaller shoulder bag for your phone, wallet and daily extras.

For a commute, the Cuyana Classic Easy Zipper Tote and Coach Brooklyn 39 offer clearly stated laptop capacity. For lighter days, the Kate Spade Deco and Madewell Shopper deserve a look. The Tory Burch Romy sits between relaxed and structured. Here’s how to narrow it down without buying more bag than you need.

Which everyday bag fits your day?

The laptop sizes above are the brands’ guidance. Measure your own device with its sleeve, and compare that with the opening and usable interior before buying. A magnetic snap does not close a bag as fully as a zipper.

1. Cuyana Classic Easy Zipper Tote: for a zip-top work bag

Cuyana has been a solid brand for years now. The appeal of the Classic Easy Zipper Tote is straightforward: a soft Italian leather tote with a hidden top zipper and space the brand says accommodates a 16-inch laptop. If keeping your belongings covered matters, start here.

The bag is unstructured. An organizer or laptop sleeve can help separate your essentials, but Cuyana’s inserts, snap-on accessories and crossbody straps are sold separately. Include those in your budget if that organized setup is what you want. Cappuccino was available at $328 when checked; the original Caramel link is no longer the featured shopping option.

2. Kate Spade Deco Large Shoulder Bag: for a divided interior

I love the minimal hardware and the slouchy shape of the Deco Large Shoulder Bag. It offers a different kind of organization from an open tote: a magnetic snap plus a center zip compartment for smaller belongings.

Kate Spade lists it at 13.3 inches long, 10.5 inches high and 6.3 inches wide, with an 11-inch handle drop. Think of it first as a shoulder bag for daily essentials. The retailer’s capacity descriptions differ, so I would not choose it for a particular laptop without checking that device’s measurements. The Timeless Taupe option was listed at $358 when checked.

3. Coach Brooklyn 39: for a roomy, relaxed shape

Soft, slouchy, and still polished. The Brooklyn bag is great for that city-girl, lived-in look. It’s ideal if your style leans more casual but still intentional. I love mine!

The linked bag is the Brooklyn 39 in Maple with brass hardware, at $495. Coach lists natural grain leather, a magnetic snap, an inside snap pocket and a 12.5-inch handle drop. Its dimensions are 15.25 inches long, 17 inches high and 4.75 inches wide; Coach says it fits a 15-inch laptop.

This is the larger 39, so pay attention to the scale in the opening outfit photo. The tradeoff for that relaxed shape is less built-in separation than a bag with several compartments. A pouch for keys and smaller items makes more sense than digging through the bottom.

4. Tory Burch Large Romy Tote: for a more structured look

I like that this tote is slightly structured. It can look polished with work clothes and still make sense on the weekend when you have less stuff.

The Large Romy in Deep Brown Leather was $595 at Bloomingdale’s when checked. The retailer lists a magnetic snap, an interior hanging zip pocket and a 12.2-inch handle drop. Its listed measurements are 12.4 inches long, 6.7 inches deep and 11.6 inches high.

Bloomingdale’s describes it as fitting a laptop without specifying a device size. Measure before choosing it for work; the word “large” is not a substitute for checking your own laptop and sleeve. The magnetic closure also makes it a different choice from the zip-top Cuyana.

5. Madewell Shopper Tote: a suede option under $200

Current Dark Carob suede Shopper from my ShopMy links. This differs from the original black leather bag.

The original black leather Shopper was the bag I’d been raving about for months. That version is now sold out. This current Dark Carob suede version is an alternative at $198, rather than the exact bag from that original recommendation.

Madewell lists a magnetic closure, an interior pocket and a 9.5-inch handle drop, with dimensions of 12.75 inches high, 12.75 inches wide and 7.5 inches deep. It is a more compact option than the Coach 39; do not assume it will hold the same laptop.

The material changes the decision, too. Madewell cautions that suede can transfer color and should be protected from moisture. That makes this a thoughtful choice for dry days if you love the texture, with more care needed around pale clothing and wet weather.

How I’d put the outfit together

For an easy work-to-weekend combination, try a roomy bag with the current J.Crew Étienne cotton-twill shirt in Hickory Ash and Madewell’s Short Perfect Vintage Wide Leg jeans in Bedford Wash. These are current outfit suggestions, not claims that they are the exact pieces in the older photos. The linked jeans are the short-length version, so check the inseam before choosing a size.

My Étienne shirt styling guide has more outfit ideas, and these five shoe styles for fall and winter can help finish the look.

Before you buy an everyday tote

  • Can it work across seasons? Think about fabric, structure and color. Black, chocolate and camel are versatile starting points, but olive, oxblood or ivory can work with your wardrobe, too.
  • What needs to fit? Lay out your laptop, sleeve, charger, water bottle and everyday essentials. A broad opening, usable base and comfortable strap can matter more than the product name.
  • How does it carry when full? Compare handle drop with the coat you wear. Do not underestimate how heavy a tote can feel after a full day.
  • Will you enjoy wearing it? I’m becoming more and more OK with beat-up bags. If you’re buying something, it deserves to be worn!! A little scratch here and there is cool. Just choose a material whose care needs fit your life.
